Branson School ace Anna Lardner capped off an undefeated run through the MCAL by claiming the league’s singles title on Friday at Novato High.
Larder took down Terra Linda’s top player, En-Ya Zhang, 6-3, 6-1 in the championship match. Zhang only dropped two MCAL matches all season, both to Lardner.
Lardner had a first-round bye then defeated Tam’s Gabriella Plonowski and Archie Williams’ Ana Fatjo en route to the final. Zhang had a bye then defeated Archie Williams’ Carly Amborn and Redwood’s Jordan Marotto to make the title match.
The doubles finals was an all-Redwood affair and lasted almost three hours. Top top-seeded team of Annesley Krawitt and Ella Povio defeated the No. 2 team of Pia Ong Bamola and Julia Laury, 3-6, 6-4, 13-11.
“Almost every game went to deuce,” Redwood coach Marlies Ziesler said via email. “Lots of long, competitive, impressive points.”
Marotto, the fourth-seeded singles player and a freshman, defeated Fatjo, 6-3, 6-1, to take third place in the singles tournament. Fatjo upset No. 3 seed Georgia Harms of Redwood on Thursday to reach the semifinals.
Branson’s unseeded duo of Sophie Liu and Reese Dahlgren finished in third place in the doubles bracket.
The North Coast Section team tournaments began on Tuesday and wrap up next Saturday. The singles and doubles section tournaments are scheduled for Nov. 15-16.
