STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — There’s been little to no talk from the federal government about a fourth stimulus check for Americans — but there’s a group of people who will see some extra money in 2022.
Parents who gave birth to a child in 2021 will be eligible next year to receive payments up to $1,400 from the final round of stimulus payments that were issued in March.
In order to qualify for the funds, parents of children born this year must meet the income requirements that have dictated previous stimulus payments — $150,000 for married couples who file joint tax returns or $75,000 for individual tax filers.
When eligible parents file their 2021 tax returns in 2022, it will notify the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that a child was born.
Additionally, eligible parents will receive $3,600 for the Child Tax Credit that was given to parents in 2021 in monthly installments when tax returns are filed.
Some parents may have opted to inform the IRS about the baby on the way to get the monthly payments in 2021.
In October, it was announced that the Child Tax Credit could be extended for another year and eligibility expanded to the nation’s poorest under President Joseph Biden’s $1.75 trillion spending framework should it pass.
The $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, designed to help the United States rebound from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, boosted the tax credit benefit for one year, expanding it from $2,000 per child annually up to as much as $3,600 per dependent for eligible families.
