CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WTVA) — A man surrendered to law enforcement late Thursday following a standoff in Clay County where gunfire apparently sent an officer to the hospital.
Sheryl Cummings identified that man as her cousin, Tommy Gandy, 38.
She said Gandy fired four shots after his mother escaped through a window at her home on Highway 46 west of West Point.
Cummings indicated one of those shots grazed the officer.
She also provided some background on her cousin, saying he has a history of mental problems and years ago held an uncle hostage.
The standoff started during the afternoon daylight but dragged on into the night as law enforcement tried to find a peaceful resolution.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Sergeant Derrick Beckom said the standoff ended sometime before 11 p.m.
